I would like to thank Ross from Evolve for his input into the environmental component of our mountain leadership courses and assisting us with the development of the minimum-impact approach of our guiding outfit. Ross has assisted us in a wide variety of other ways in the past, including producing copy for signage, photographing mountain locations and researching/presenting various specialized topics. Your professional service was much appreciated.

About us

Evolve was conceived towards the end of 2008, as a means to provide a biological “one-stop shop” for both the film industry and the academic community. The growth of interest in South Africa as a base of operations for both filming and research has grown almost exponentially over the last few years – it is this demand for up-to-date and accurate biological support that we seek to address. Based in the incomparably beautiful Cape Town, Evolve is superbly placed for incursions into both the wilderness areas and academic institutions of southern Africa.

Evolve was established by Ross Cowlin, whose experience in the mountain guiding industry and his background in biology meant he was uniquely placed to run an operation of this nature. As an alumnus of the University of Cape Town, his continued relationship with the zoology department allowed for the recruitment of consultants with whom he had not only worked and studied, but who are also well-respected in their fields.

Southern Africa – and South Africa in particular – provides the film maker or scientist with a wealth of unique opportunities. We have stark deserts, lush forests, pristine grasslands, majestic bushveld, snow-capped mountains, rivers, lakes and two oceans. One of world’s 6 floral kingdoms is contained within the borders of the Western Cape. Despite being the smallest of these kingdoms, it is the most diverse. Our beautiful Table Mountain alone shelters more plant species than the entire United Kingdom! With this level of diversity, there will certainly never be a shortage of fascinating material. Although based in South Africa, we have worked and travelled in Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Kenya - and currently have plans underway to expand our operations to several other countries in Africa.
